Dan Evans defeats Karen Khachanov at the Vienna Open
Dan Evans, the British number two
Evans will advanced to the quarter-finals of the Vienna Open after defeating Karen Khachanov in straight sets.
Unseeded Evans defeated the Russian 6-2 6-2 in one hour and sixteen minutes and Evans will face Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinals after the Canadian upset fourth seed Taylor Fritz 6-1 4-6 6-3.
In other news besides evans, British number one Cameron Norrie will face Marcos Giron in the last 16 after the American defeated Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-4 6-2 in Vienna.
Meanwhile, top seed Daniil Medvedev and second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the round of 16 as well.
In the last first-round match, world number four Medvedev defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-2 6-2 in under one hour.
The Russian broke twice in each set and did not face a break point in his 59-minute victory.
In the last 16, Medvedev will face fellow former US Open champion Dominic Thiem, who saved two match chances in a thrilling triumph against American Tommy Paul on Tuesday.
Tsitsipas, a Greek, also had no issue in his match, defeating Austria’s Dennis Novak 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 in 1 hour 28 minutes.
“It takes some time to acclimate to these new circumstances,” Tsitsipas remarked. “I was playing against a player I knew nothing about. I’d never played him before.
“I played extremely well in the second set, finding my stride and gaining a feel for the court and the balls.
“In my perspective, the second set was excellent. I only hope I could have done it in the first set, but it didn’t happen. In the first one, I had to battle hard to obtain it and play a strong tie-break.”
Tsitsipas will next face Croatian Borna Coric in a rematch of the Cincinnati Masters final, which Coric won in September.
Carlos Alcaraz, world number one, eased into his 11th quarter-final of the season at the Swiss Indoors with a facile victory against Botic van de Zandschulp.
The 19-year-old, who earlier this week overcame Britain’s Jack Draper, defeated the Dutchman 6-4 6-2 in Basel to continue his quest for a sixth trophy of the year.
In the last eight, Alcaraz will face either fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta or local star Dominic Stricker.
