Jerwin Ancajas ups weight for upcoming Philippines fight
Jerwin Ancajas made the decision to step up to the bantamweight class from the super flyweight division in order to try and redeem himself in the sport of mixed martial arts.
On Wednesday, the former IBF junior bantamweight champion made the announcement that he, together with his trainer Joven Jimenez and handler Sean Gibbons, had made the decision to step up to 118 pounds for his home bout scheduled for February 2023.
“Yung pinaplano sa February next year, sa 118 na po ako lalaban. Sana palarin tayo sa 118 at makabalik tayo,” stated Jerwin Ancajas in a video. “Pagsisikapan pa natin makaahon at makakuha sana ulit ng title bout.”
(I shall make my debut in the 118 division in the month of February of the following year. We are going to give it our all in the hopes of making it back to the championship level.
The boxer, who is now 30 years old, was defeated by Fernando Martinez of Argentina in their rematch on October 8 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Martinez won by unanimous decision.
It was the first time in Jerwin Ancajas’s career that he had lost consecutive matches, and it happened in Las Vegas in February of last year when he was fighting Martinez for the IBF Junior Bantamweight title.

“Coach and sir Sean are still working out the details of the location for my next battle. In his native language, Ancajas added, “I will return to practice as soon as possible because it has been a long time since my last battle here in the Philippines.”
